Clouds do Croft...

As the Vamp mentioned several weeks ago I took a train trip from New Orleans across Texas to Cloudcroft, New Mexico with baby Eli and the rest of my family. What a trip! No surprise the Amtrak is no Orient Express... But all inelegance aside, it was a wonderful vacation. I'm surprised more people don't travel by train. We saw such beautiful countryside. You see things from a train that you don't see while driving on the highway and the constant humming & vibration of the train lulled the baby to sleep for naps.

(Old trestle once used to mine for gold.)

Nestled in between Lincoln National Park and an Apache Indian reservation, the town of Cloudcroft is beautiful & filled with history.
(Apache Warrior)

Cloudcroft is also filled with mom & pop shops selling American Indian art, accessories, and jewelry, but it's anything but overly commercial. It reminded me of Northern Exposure's Sicily, Alaska.
Inspired to utilize more natural elements in my design, my dad and I each bought huge chunks of raw turquoise which will look lovely atop a stack of art books in my den. And I found this gorgeous necklace...
Yep, the trip got me in touch with my inner nature girl/native American and I've decided
we need a tipi for our backyard... How fun for cool fall nights?
While we never saw an actual bear which the area is supposedly full of, my sister and her kids did find some very large blackbear tracks.

And this time of year thousands of hummingbirds flock to the area on their migration south. We spent much of the time sitting on the porch watching them fight over a spot to drink from the feeders.

It was inspiring in so many ways, we can't wait to go back.

inspired by anna spiro.

Anna Spiro was our muse today - this is a lovely vignette from her shop

Anna Spiro writes the blog "abosulutely beautiful things" HERE.
She is Australian and has a wonderful shop there, and she is an interior designer. She just launched her new web site HERE. We were inspired by one her photos, and did a little shop styling in her honor.

Anna Spiro inspired us to do this perch. vignette
We didn't have the beautiful bouquet of lilies on hand so we used something from our courtyard
The nude over the antique English chest is a mixed media and drawing done by Caroline

The thing that caught our eye is the drawing of the nude hanging above the antique chest. It's lovely. We wonder how many of you are comfortable using nudes in your decor schemes.

Detail of the pretty nail heads Caroline used on the side of painting
It's so pretty it need not be framed

The mixed media piece we used above our chest is done by Caroline. It's very pretty, and extremely interesting at the same time.

We did a little photo research on the web, and came across some pretty nice of images using nudes in interior design.

All of us here at perch. have been to art school. One of us has been a professor of art at the university level, and one of us put herself through art school artist modeling. So we are very much at home with using nudes in the home.

From Meg at Pigtown

When is a nude pretty and tasteful, and when does it cross the line into creepy bad taste?

Nudes from an old Horchow catalog
You can't get more mainstream than that!

One of us had a visitor at our home refer to a classic museum reporduction nude study hung in the bathroom as our porn collection!!! They said we were lucky we didn't have kids! How about you - would it be a problem for your kids to see a work of art depicting a nude?

The fabulous Brooke Gianetti from Velvet and Linen collects drawings of nudes
These are in her master bedroom - in fact she purchased a beautiful nude from perch.
And she and her husband Steve are parents.

how to create a swedish style entry hall the perch way.

By mixing the holy trinity of antique, vintage, and contemporary
you can make Swedish style all your own and not a theme park decor
Click on images for larger view

Our design point of view at perch. is to mix antique, vintage, and contemporary in a way that becomes your own signature style.
Swedish style is at an all time high in popularity. The pale colors, and romantic French lines of the furniture appeal to many.
Our entry hall vignette shows the classic Mora clock. The demi lune table is contemporary, it's clean lines timeless. Flanking it are a pair of antique chairs, with a original distressed gilding. The seats are covered in burlap with a nail head trim. This fabric choice gently updates the antique chairs, and makes them a perfect choice for Swedish, French, of Belgian designs.
The faux bois mirror is a perch. twist. It's made of papier mache and painted our signature color of the palest blue, which is also a signature color in Swedish design.
The vintage candelabra holds True Grace printed candles with a pop of intense blue, a nice way to add a wow factor. The bowl is antique used as a wonderful catch all. The small vintage style chandelier hanging above is new, but looks antique.

The antique portrait of a girl in the oval gilded frame is classic Swedish style. We also love our tall antique wood carved lady.
So do play with things that are on trend and popular, and do make the style your own by mixing it up.

train travel.

Valorie reporting:

Caroline and the family are getting ready to go on a mini vacation, taking an overnight train trip across Texas.

Alfred Hitchcock "Strangers On A Train"

Party in a sleeping berth in 'Some Like It Hot"

Overnight train travel conjures up so many glam and fun images. How many movies have we seen depicting train travel with sleeping cars and dining cars and club cars?

Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe in "Some Like It Hot"

"The Sleeping Car Murder" with Yves Montand and Simone Signoret

Over night train travel in Europe has never gone out of style or business. Though not as popular here in the USA, Amtrak still offers sleeping cars on limited runs.

How fun would it be to travel by train overnight?!

Prince Charles has a writing desk on the Royal Train

I doubt there will be luxe accommodations on Amtrak such as the ones found on the Royal Train for Queen Elizabeth and the family.

Who wouldn't love to travel as the royals do?

You can read more HERE about the Royal Train.

The sleeping car for Caroline and the family will be a bit more down to earth.

Nothing like the Orient Express, but still fun.

How much luggage will Caroline take?

Every girl needs a train case.

These little luggage tags would be great for baby Eli. You can get them HERE.

Though no passport is needed for Texas yet, this baby globetrotter set is mighty cute, and you can get it HERE.

How about you: Have you done much travel by overnight train? Did you love it? Caroline says if it's a bust she'll be on the first plane back home.
