As most of you know by now, perch.’s own Valorie Hart has another life beyond her very significant role as “in-house design diva” at perch. and celebrated design blogger for her blog “The Visual Vamp.”
Valorie and her husband/partner Alberto Paz are the pre-eminent teachers of the traditional Argentine salon tango. The pair has traveled around the world to teach workshops, when not doing so here in New Orleans. They have won many accolades over the years for their talent in tango and even won the prized USA Salon Tango Championship last year in New York.
Earlier this week, Valorie and Alberto flew up to Canada for another tango workshop. Upon landing in Calgary and walking through customs, Alberto had a very serious heart attack. Thankfully, a slew of competent people were there to do CPR until he was able to get urgent care at the local hospital. He was medically induced into a coma by doctors to prevent any significant brain damage and allow his brain time “to rest” from the lack of oxygen. They weren't certain he would make it or what his brain function would be if he did.
Yesterday, Valorie played Argentine tango music in the hospital room and Alberto opened his eyes for the first time. Since then, he has squeezed her hand and earlier today he began speaking. Valorie just texted me “He is better! Talking, smiling. Alive like a newborn baby. I never want to take my eyes off him.”
I know that it is because of Alberto’s strong-will, his love for his children & the love he and Valorie have for each other, that they will have the chance to tango together again one day.
To all of our friends who have been praying/meditating/sending good energy to Alberto and Valorie this week– Thank you! Please keep it up because it is working!
We will keep you posted on his recovery.
